An alkaline cell having amalgamated zinc as the major constituent of the active material of the anode is characterized in that tin is also included in the anode as an active material. The tin is included to produce a step in the operating voltage of the cell towards the end of the usable cell capacity but before the cell is exhausted, the voltage step permitting an indication to be given for replacement of the cell by a fresh cell. In one method of making the cell the active material is obtained by reacting dissolved stannous chloride with an amalgamated zinc powder. A preferred active material composition comprises from 70% to 92% by weight of zinc, from 3% to 10% by weight of mercury, and from 5% to 20% by weight of tin. |
