1486065 Turbidometers H MULLER 14 March 1975 [18 March 1974] 10838/75 Heading G1X In a method of monitoring the growth of a micro-organism in an aerated liquid meduim, a sample of a fermenting medium is withdrawn into a measuring chamber 3 mounted upon the fermentation vessel 2, the withdrawn sample being maintained therein until all gas bubbles have risen to the sample surface, the turbidity of the sample then being measured photo-electrically below the free sample thereof, the measurement being recorded before returning the sample to the vessel 2. As described, a cylinder is mounted on an open end of the chamber 3 remote from the vessel 2 and has therewithin a movable bellows 5 in liquid communication with the vessel 2 and secured at one end to a suction device comprising a piston 6. The photo-electric measurement is effected by axially aligned light source 13 and photo-cell 14 on opposite sides of the chamber 3, the output of photo-cell 14 being amplified and recorded by a pen recorder. The figure shows the retracted position of the piston 6, a reduced diameter portion 9 of rod extension 8 entering a gap 10 in the chamber 3 during expellation of the sample from the chamber 3 so as to clean, by means of cleaning disc 12, adjacent portions of the light source 13 and photocell 14. |
