PURPOSE:To manufacture rodlike quartz glass while saving energy and resources by pouring an aqueous soln. of a silicic ester and a liq. having higher specific gravity than the soln. and incompatibility with the soln. in a columnar mold, converting the soln. into gel, and calcining the gel. CONSTITUTION:A liq. which is 1.2-1.0 time as high in specific gravity as liq. starting material and is incompatible with the material is poured in a columnar mold beforehand, and a mixed soln. of water or hydrous alcohol and a silicic ester such as methyl silicate as the liq. starting material is charged onto said liq. Fluorinated oil (polymer of trifluorochloroethylene having 1.97 specific gravity) or the like is used as the incompatible liq. the specific gravity of the oil or the like may be adjusted by adding liq. paraffin or the like. The liq. starting material allowed to stand in the mold is converted into gel, and a space formed along the wall of the mold by a contraction in volume due to the gelling is filled with the incompatible luq. to retain the desired shape. The rodlike gel is then calcined to manufacture rodlike quartz glass. |
