A process for the production of a membrane separator for use in an alkali accumulator battery comprises activating a film of a polyolefin such as polyethylene by irradiation with ultra violet light, covering both sides of the film with at least one layer of an absorbent cellulose material, such as cotton gauze, impregnated with a vinyl monomer, and covering the sides of the cellulose material remote from the film with a sheet of an inert plastics material to form a five layer sandwich. The sandwich is then passed over a heating element under a load of from 10 to 30 gm/cm<2> for a period of from 10 to 45 minutes to effect grafting of the vinyl monomer onto the polyolefin thereby to form a said membrane separator. For economic reasons, it is desirable for the sandwich to have a continuous length: in this way a continuous production line may be established. |
