A method of assaying a basic drug in a biological fluid by an assay method based on a competitive binding technique and in which a compound of formula (I)

is added as a blocking or inhibiting agent to prevent binding of protein to the receptor material is described. Also disclosed are kits suitable for carrying out such assays.
