In steam bath devices for the generation of a saturated steam atmosphere there is a problem in that the required amount of steam should be obtained with very little consumption of water and energy and with very little structural expenditure. To achieve this, there is provided a steam generation device having an evaporator surface (8) located in the outlet region of a liquid supply line (7), the evaporator surface being provided with a liquid outflow (12) for the formation of a heated liquid layer flowing over the evaporator surface. A particular water- and energy-saving feature of this is the formation of a liquid circulation over the evaporator surface by means of a collection vessel (1), a circulation pump (3) and a heating device (2) which is in heat-conducting connection with the evaporator surface or can be located in the collection vessel. The liquid circulation may also be provided with a container for a solution of active substance or a mixing container (4), and this results in intensive utilisation of the active substance. <IMAGE>
