The bogies (1) of a rail vehicle with gear wheel drive each have two wheel sets (5, 5a) with the same drive devices (13) and identical travel motors (14) which rotate in the same direction. In order to increase protection against derailing, the stationary wheel pressures of the "critical" running wheels (9, 9a) which experience the greatest load relief during braking when going downhill are greater than the stationary wheel pressures of the other running wheels (8, 8a). This can be brought about for example by additional pretensioning of the springs (17), associated to the critical running wheels (9, 9a), of the primary suspension with respect to their other, otherwise identical springs (16) by means of pretensioning rings. The additional loading of the critical running wheels (9, 9a), is preferably selected such that the safety factors against derailing are at least approximately as great for left-hand and right-hand bends under predetermined operating conditions.
