[Also in Divisions A4, B7 and F2] An energy absorbing device 14 (see Division F2) associated with the lower portion of an ejector seat of an aircraft comprises a first part of the energy absorbing device having a cylindrical plate 13 of generally uniform thickness resting on a die 26 and a second part including a tapered shearing tool 14, such that under the action of an applied force the parts are moved relatively to each other to cause the cylindrical plate 13 to be deformed by the action of the shearing tool 14 to generate during the relative movement a substantially constant force in opposition to the applied force. In operation, when the aircraft makes a forced landing, downwardly directed loads as indicated by the arrow 31 are transferred from the ejector seat to the energy absorbing device through outer and inner tubes 4, 5 of the ejector gun 2, to depress a push rod 9 causing the shearing tool 14 to move downwardly in relation to a cylindrical tube 7 forming part of the aircraft fixed structure. Shearing elements 20 are first of all sheared and then the shearing tool 14 is depressed through the plate 13 to deform the metal and to generate a constant shearing force during the whole movement of the shearing tool which acts to retard the ejector seat. By this means the retardation force of the ejector seat is kept below the limit for personal injury of the pilot, for example 15g.</p> |
