A radiation shield comprises an enclosure filled with crushed serpentine mineral compacted to a density of about 1900 kg/m<SP>3</SP>. The serpentine may be mixed with one or more gammasuppressors selected from barytes, magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, metallic lead and metallic iron and one or more thermal neutron suppressors selected from borocalcite, colemanite, boron carbide and calcium metaborate. The shield may be made by filling the enclosure with alternate layers of serpentine (which may or may not be mixed with a thermal neutron suppressor) and a gamma-suppressor in which case each layer is compacted to a density greater than 1900 Kg)m<SP>3</SP>.</p> |
