1,097,428. Fuel cells. SOCIETE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM). April 7, 1965 [April 10, 1964], No. 14773/65. Heading H1B. A battery of fuel cells includes spaced electrode plates e.g. 1, 12, each of which comprises a marginal supporting part and a central part 2 embossed on both sides (Fig. 2, not shown). Each electrode is a bipolar electrode and may comprise a metal support coated on opposite sides with a suitable metal. Each cell of the battery comprises an electrode plate 1 with electrolyte channels 3, 4, 5, 6 in its margin, a plastics spacer 9 which has two vertical channels which correspond to the channels 5, 6 of electrode 1 and two horizontal castellated margins, a semipermeable membrane (e.g. ion exchange membrane) 8 with channels identical with those of electrode 1, a second spacer 11 which is identical to spacer 9 but rotated 90 degrees with respect thereto, and an electrode 12 identical with electrode 1. One face of each electrode of this cell forms part of an adjacent cell. A stack of cells is clamped between blocks 13, 14 and electrolytes are circulated through connections 15, 16 and 17, 18 one of the electrolytes being circulated between the frame 9 and adjacent electrode 1 of each cell via the horizontal channels and the other electrolyte being circulated between the frame 11 and electrode 12 of each cell by the vertical channels. Such a battery necessitates only one regenerator in a redox system instead of one per cell. Cooling fins may be provided on the electrodes. |
