Stock is cleaned of scale and lubricants by striking an arc between it and a spaced electrode , the opposite side of the stock in the cleaning area being cooled, pref. by placing the stock on a cooled support which may extend beyond the stock edge and may comprise cooled drums around which the stock is bent in the cleaning area. The support may be used to deliver current to the stock from a power source. The method provides improved efficiency and eliminates undesirable heating so that quality may be improved. The method may be used for improving and refining the metal surface.
