The invention relates to a mixing device with a vessel (10) with a vertical suction pipe (13) arranged in the axis thereof and a centrifugal fan (17) at the lower end of the suction pipe (13). A plurality of vertical heating tubes (30) surround the suction pipe (13). Inlet orifices (45, 46, 47) for the starting materials and at least outlet orifice (50) for the mixed product are provided. By means of the centrifugal fan (17), fluids are drawn downwards through the suction pipe (13), mixed in a region of strong turbulence below the centrifugal fan (17) and forced upwards through the heating tubes (30). In the heating tubes (30), the fluids react in the same way as in a plug flow reactor and, in the remaining part of the vessel (10), the mixing and reaction take place in the same way as in a backmixed reactor. The mixing device can be operated continuously or discontinuously. A process for mixing fluids is also indicated. <IMAGE>
