An auxiliary heater (20) uses a U-shaped ribbed heating pipe (42) in a housing which is either fastened to or integral with a cylinder block (26). Coolant is fed into the housing (30) from the cooling jacket (26) or from a heat exchanger (38) via an inlet (32) by means of a coolant pump (36) for coolant after a vehicle cabin has heated up. The heated coolant is discharged via an outlet (34) of the housing and subsequently conducted to the heat exchanger (38). The direct connection between the auxiliary heater and the coolant (26) reduces the expenditure in terms of lines and permits the weaker pump (36) to be used. The arrangement also reduces the surface over which heat can be lost and at the same time promotes the heating up of the engine. <IMAGE>
