The grinding machine is intended for grinding rotationally symmetric work such as shafts with portions of different dia. It comprises a grinding disc carried in a fixed portal frame and a work support on a table which is vertically movable to bring the work into contact with the disc. The work may arrive on a conveyor belt or the like which passes below the disc and carries the work at least approximately aligned parallel to the disc axis. The vertical feed movement of the table is preferably in increments controlled via a work measuring unit.
