A turret-head tool holder for machine tools, in particular for lathes, is described which has greater rigidity and accuracy and requires a minimum amount of time for the transition from one indexing position into another desired indexing position and which, in addition, is exceptionally simple in its construction. This turret head consists of a basic body and a tool holder which is rotatably fastened to the basic body and is axially displaceable in the axis of rotation, namely from a first position, in which it is in engagement with the basic body by flexible means and via a coupling, into a second position in which it is separated from the basic body. Furthermore, it consists of a drive member, which is rotatably fastened to the basic body, extends coaxially along through the tool holder and can be set in rotary motion in both directions via drive means, and also of an essentially V-shaped groove, which is made on the side of the drive member, and a guide pin which projects at the tool holder and is in engagement with the groove so that the tool holder, during rotation of the drive member in both directions, is axially displaced from the first position into the second position and is then carried along for rotation in both directions. In addition, an adjusting bolt is provided which is arranged in the basic body in such a way that it can be retracted and can be moved towards and away from the tool holder by the action of suitable actuating means in order to engage in or disengage from a multiplicity of successive recesses which are made in the tool holder.
