Laminate for use in contact with molten glass comprises a substrate of refractory metal and a first layer of metal impermeable to oxygen. The substrate and layer are intimately bonded together by hot isostatic pressing. The refractory metal is selected from Mo, Nb, Hf, Ti, Cr, Ta, Zr, W, Re, Mn and their alloys and the metal coating is a precious metal selected from Pt, Pd, Ir, Os, Rh, Au, Au, Ru and their alloys and it surrounds the refractory metal completely. The coating is made to conform with the substrate and to present oxygen-impermeable walls around the substrate, is sealed around the substrate, then isostatically hot pressed to bond the coating intimately to the substrate. Laminates in both simple and complex shapes may be prepared when the coating is sintered onto the substrate with the aid of isostatic pressing. The coating is relatively thick and more difficult to penetrate by damage than vapour deposited and other coatings of prior art. The tools obtained have improved mechanical strength and will resist temps. of up to 1900 deg.C. |
