[Also in Division H5] In a machine for stretching a plurality of single and multi-filament thermoplastic yarns each yarn from a bobbin (15), (Fig. 5, drawings not shown) passes over a draw off device comprising (4) nip rolls, past a drop wire arrangement (K) detecting breakages, about a snubbing device (25), through a curved electric heating element (R) to " skewed advancing " stretch rolls (29), (30). The element (R), (Division H5) comprises a smooth channel of increasing width having a temperature gradient with the inlet end hottest. The wall temperature is measured by a thermocouple (V) and compressed air can be blown through the element to thread a yarn or to cool the element if the yarn breaks. The drop wire arrangement (K), Figs. 14, 15, comprises a wire (101) normally resting on the yarn (Y) and pivotally connected to a piston (95) having a narrow part (97). The piston slides in a bore (87) in a body (80) and is connected to a compressed air manifold (26a). If the yarn breaks the wire (101) falls and moves the piston allowing air to pass to the element R, a slotted arrangement allows the wire to gather momentum before engaging the piston. To thread yarn through the element a manual valve 111 connected to a manifold 110 is operated.
