Copolymers of olefins with N-alkenyl cyclic imides - useful as viscosity index improvers and dispersant additives for lubricants

New amorphous copolymers contain (a) 80-99.9 wt.% of nonpolar units derived from 2-18C monoolefins and opt. >=1 nonconjugated diene, the proportion of diene in the copolymer being 20 wt.%, and (b) 0.1-20 wt.% of polar units derived from >=1 cyclic imide of formula (I): (where Z is 2-16C alkenyl; A is a divalent, opt. unsatd. 2-12C hydrocarbon radical opt. substd. by amino, halo or carboxy gps.). Certain of the copolymers are useful as VI improvers and dispersant additives for lubricants.
