α-Chloro-diethylcarbonate (I), useful for enhancing absorptiveness and durability of medicine, was prepd. by chlorination of diethylcarbonate (II) with Cl2 in the presence of CCl4 under the ultraviolet rays. Thus, dried Cl2 (2 mole) and N2 gas was flowed in the diethylcarbonate 236.6 g (2 mole) at -3-0≦̸C for 5 hr under the ultraviolet rays and then unreacted diethylcarbonate was eliminated to give compd. (I) 24 g (b.p. 160-163≦̸C, yield 7.2%).
