Cellulose is hydrolysed to monosaccharides and/or disaccharides by treatment with a cellulolytic enzyme prepn. from a strain or mutant of a Cellulomonas or Pseudomonas bacterium in combination with a cellulase derived from a fungus or an actinomycete. The combination of enzymes is more effective than either used on its own. Only a small amt. of the expensive fungal cellulase is required.
