NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formulaI(R<1> is H, lower alkyl, acetyl or benzyl). EXAMPLE:2-Nitro-6-benzyloxy-beta-phenylethyl alcohol. USE:A synthetic intermediate for 4-substituted indoles useful as a synthetic raw material for medicines and agricultural chemicals. PROCESS:A 2-nitro-6-hydroxytoluene derivative expressed by formula II is reacted with a formaldehyde in an aprotic polar solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide, at 0-100 deg.C, preferably 10-70 deg.C, for 0.2-2hr to give the compound expressed by formulaI. The molar amount of the formaldehyde to be used is 0.2-1.5 times that of the compound expressed by formula II. |
