PURPOSE:To perform electrolysis with low electrolytic cell voltage by pressurizing the polar chamber liquid on the side having no electrode activity in ion exchange membrane electrolysis wherein porous layers having electrode activity and having no electrode activity on one and other sides. CONSTITUTION:A porous layer having gas and liquid permeability and no electrode activity is formed on one side of an ion exchange membrane segmenting an electrolytic cell and a porous layer having gas and liquid permeability and electrode activity on the other side. In the case of performing electrolysis with this, it is necessary to bring the porous electrode layer into good contact with a current collector usually, whilist the porous layer having no electrode activity does not require particular tight contact with the electrode. Thereupon, if the polar chamber liquid on the side formed with the porous layer having no electrode activity is pressurized, the good contact between the porous electrode layer and the current collector is achieved. |
