C. engine in which the crank-case and the part of the engine in which the cylinders are defined include two end walls 10, which support crank-shaft bearings 10a, and two side walls (11) Fig. 2 (not shown), inter-connecting and formed integrally with the end walls, no one wall varies in thickness by more than 1À3:1, the difference in thickness between any two walls is not more than 1À5:1 and the walls are such that the amplitude of vibration at the middle of each wall is not more than three times the amplitude of a vibration at the edge of the same wall, which latter vibration induces the former. A transverse wall 16, intermediate the two end walls 10, may be provided. Recesses to accommodate cylinder liners 14 and to form coolant chambers result in a remaining wall thickness which lies within the 1À3:1 limiting ratio. A mounting boss 17, e.g. for a fuel pump, may be provided. |
