Lean ores, concentrates and/or intermediate prods., esp. chalcopyrite and/or frackeite, are fed into a melting cyclone, possibly together with fuel. In the cyclone, hot gases cause the formation of a molten metalp phase (I) contg. non-volatile and noble metals; and a slag phase. The volatile metals, esp. Sn, Zn and Pb, are collected as mixed oxides, and are sepd. from each other by selective volatilisation and/or reduced to metals. Phase (I) is sepd. from the slag and made into a crude alloy, from which noble metals such as Ag are removed by refining. The slag obtd. from the melting cyclone is pref. treated to recover any Zn as ZnO. The pref. plant includes a volatilisation furnace. Economic winning of metals from lean ores is provided. |
