The valve has a stationary valve section and a slide, each having valve apertures, which form a flow channel of variable capacity. One valve aperture (16) in one section (15) has one or more associated apertures (13) in the other section (8). The width of a latter aperture, measured at right angles to the direction of movement of the slide, decreases to a fraction of the width of the first-mentioned aperture. The slide is adjusted in stages by the drive unit (21). The valve aperture of decreasing width is formed as a groove.
