The invention achieves the object of developing a method of welding different thicknesses of material, preferably hollow bodies to solid bodies of similar or dissimilar materials, in particular a knife handle to a knife blade. Here, means adaptable to automation are proposed which guarantee the quality features demanded in the case of these welded joints. The invention essentially consists in a protective thermal shield being introduced between the components to be joined in such a way that the energy supplied from a heat source is split up into primary and secondary energy. During a first rotation of the components, pre-heating with partial melting of the hollow-like component with the protective thermal shield takes place. During the subsequent second rotation, the protective thermal shield is completely remelted and finally produces a sound weld formation while using the cushion effect.
