The invention relates to a method and a device for producing blocks with wire comb binding. A conveyor (17) feeds an uninterrupted, C-shaped wire comb (4) to a cutting apparatus (28) which has a plurality of cutting tools (27a...27f...) for simultaneously cutting off wire comb bindings (7a...7f). The wire comb bindings cut off are pushed by means of a slide (37), which is movable transversely to the conveyor (17), onto retaining means (44a...44f) which are movable to a varying extent in the longitudinal direction of the wire comb binding (7a...7f...), which retaining means pull the wire comb bindings (7a...7f) apart by displacement to a varying extent. The spaced-apart wire comb bindings (7a...7f) are gripped by jaws (64', 64'') forming tongs and advanced to the sheet pile (14).
