A battery monitoring system comprises a drive battery with 18 individual 12-volt part-packs (10, 11, 12) and for each part-pack one voltage sensor (14, 15, 16). Each voltage sensor continuously monitors the operating voltage of the associated part-pack and a warning lamp (24) is switched on when the voltage across one of the part-packs drops below 9 volts. The monitoring system is also combined with the motor control for electric vehicles which comprises a gas pedal potentiometer (11) which supplies a signal for the current requirement of the armature winding to a chopper circuit. When the voltage of one of the part-packs drops below 9 volts, the demand signal of the armature current is reduced as a result of which the armature current is reduced. <IMAGE>
