The invention relates to a turret head with horizontal axis and a plurality of tool carriers, of which some are parallel to the axis of rotation of the turret head are displaceable and in the turret head so as to be able to occupy an outer working position and a withdrawn rest position in the turret head when the machining is complete. The tool carriers are generally suitable for internal machining and in the working position in the turret-head housing are locked as close to the contact point of the tool cutting edge as possible in order to reduce the projecting length which is exposed to the cutting forces. This is achieved in that each tool carrier has its own hydraulic circuit which is independent of and separate from the others, only operates when the tool carrier has reached its working position and actuates the locking means, which consist of radial pistons, so that a lateral pressure force is produced which securely clamps the tool carrier in its bearing sleeve.
