An imaging system that can be moved back and forth is driven by a first drive source, and a rotatable, photoconducting drum is driven by a second drive source. The time required by the drum in order to rotate through a prescribed angle is measured. The measured time is then compared with a prescribed reference time, in order in this way to evaluate or estimate a fluctuation component in the rotation period of the drum in accordance with the comparison result. In accordance with the evaluated or estimated fluctuation component there is individual presetting or determination of a starting or initial desired speed during an intitial scanning movement of the imaging system and of a constant desired speed during a constant scanning movement.
