The VTOL aircraft has an annular fuselage lifted by causing a rapidly-moving medium to sweep from a central point in all directions over a lift-generating wing (2). Horizontal or intermediate flight is achieved by actuated a thrust deflector (4) and/or tilting the radial-compressor power unit (1) about a fulcrum to make the flow over the surface unidirectional. Control surfaces (3) are provided. Separate power units (5) for horizontal flight may be used. In an alternative, air is drawn-in over the upper surface and discharged downwards from the fuselage underside.
