A die employed for the casting of metal parts consists of a stationary half (a) and a mobile half (b). In die half (a) is an injector barrel contg. a plunger which drives molten metal through a feeder and runner into the die cavity. The die cavity forming the feeder is located in the mobile die half (b), and the tip of the plunger enters the feeder cavity. The dia. of the plunger is pref. larger than normal so die filling times are reduced. When the plunger enters the feeder ensures efficient feeding during the solidification of the casting. With conventional injector barrels, a solid skin of metal forms in the bore of the barrel at its outlet end, thus greatly increasing the pressure required to ensure adequate feeding during final solidification of the casting. The invention eliminates this problem.
|
