A gate wedge or rotary spherical valve has a body of rectangular section made as a tube or fabricated to which are attached hub plates forming aligned flow passages; the body is reinforced by ribs welded to connecting straps. The body houses or is formed with two mounting rings 39 that co-operate with the two faces of the gate, each ring embodying a stepped annular recess 43, 44 housing a number of springs 49 loading a nylon annular seal 46 mounted upon a metal carrier 51 through a rib 52; the two latter parts may be bonded and/or shrink-fitted together. The seal 46 abuts the gate via an insert 54 of elastomeric material, e.g. synthetic rubber, and is provided with a seal ring 56 and a " snap-shoulder " to prevent its withdrawal from the mounting ring; the recess 44 is enclosed by an annular sediment guard. The diameter of the recess 43 is the same as or larger than the effective diameter of the insert 54 to provide an assembly which is either balanced or the upstream seal 46 is urged by the fluid against the gate. The annular seal may be disposed externally on a reduced diameter part of the mounting ring and provided with an outer metal reinforcing band as well as an extension which partly encloses the springs. The sediment guard may be omitted and the carrier provided with a vent and a sharp inner edge to clear away any sediment. In another form the seal assembly comprises an elastomeric sleeve (161, Fig. 12, not shown) bonded to the carrier 162 whilst the springs 163 are in a recess 164 in the mounting ring 166. The sleeve has a flange 161a which form a seating surface for the springs. |
