The safety belt retractor comprises a rotary member (20) which is separate from a take-up shaft (9) of theretractor but coaxially with it. This performs a relative movement with respect to the shaft when the acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle reaches a predetermined value. A latch is articulated on the rotary member and an engaging member comes into engagement with it to displace the latch member in a direction away from the center of shaft. A locking device comes into engagement with the latch member (23, 24) when it is displaced to arrest the rotation of the take-up shaft.
