A spherical member (10) is advanced by pressure along the interior of a pipeline (12) to seat against a restraining member (14) forming a pressure-tight seal. The advancing pressure may then be increased within the pipeline to monitor for leaks in the upstream section of the pipeline. The spherical member (10) is easily retrieved by back pressuring the downstream section of the pipeline (12) thereby dislodging the spherical member from the restraining member (14).
