The medium or high tension electric isolator uses a flexible whip conductor (13) which slides under a hook (12) as the isolator is opened then snaps free to rupture the arc when the main isolator arm (8) is well removed from the fixed contact (11). The rupture capacity of the isolator can be increased by reducing the inertia of the whip and any associated parts and by winding the end of the whip into a spring. The required conductivity and flexibility is retained by manufacturing the whip (12) from an aluminium and magnesium or titanium alloy then forming its fixed end into a spring (14). To reduce the effects of corrosion arising from galvanic action between the whip material and the different material of the isolator knife (9), an isolating material is placed below the spring (14) and against the cheeks of the knife (9), leaving the tail of the spring to provide a stationary contact with the isolator arm.
|
