PURPOSE:To obtain stable characteristic by holding a base elastically through a damper while providing a damping mechanism which includes a dust-free cover and absorbs the vibration of the base over the carriage block of a rotary actuator. CONSTITUTION:In a magnetic disk storage device, disks 4 fixed on a spindle 5 and a base 1 supporting a voice coil motor which drives a carriage 8 linearly are made independent of a main base 2 by a damper 3 in terms of vibration. On the base 1, a damping mechanism 10 absorbing the vibration of the base 1 is mounted. The damping mechanism 10 is covered with a dust-free cover 40 and its hollow cylindrical damping mass 30a closed at one end is equipped on the base with a screw 20 through a spring 10a; and this mass 30a is vertically movable with damping characteristics by the spring 10a and horizontally movable by a hole 31 having a much greater diameter than that of the screw 20.
