PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance useful as an industrial raw matrial, economically, by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of a phenolic comp. having hydrogen atom at the ortho-position with methanol using a catalyst comsisting of iron oxide and indium oxide wherein the amount of indium is less than iron. CONSTITUTION:The objective comped. is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of a phenolic compound of formula (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H or alkyl such as methyl, ethyl, etc.) having at least one H atome at the ortho-position, e.g. phenol, o-cresol, etc. with methanol at 250-500 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst containing iron oxide and indium oxide wherein the atomic ratio of Fe:In is 99:1-90:10, pref. 97:3-90:10. The molar ratio of methanol : phenolic compd. in the reaction mixture is 1:1-10:1. |
