Device for spreading a pair of slide fastener stringer tapes apart at an element-free gap includes a pair of grippers (7) slidable on a support table to move transversely of the fastener and to engage one side of the tapes, and a shaft (9) carried on the table frame and drivable towards the grippers. A 2nd pair of grippers (7') are coupled with the shaft face to engage the other side of the tapes & are movable away from each other axially of the fastener. Shaft motion towards the table is converted into 2nd gripper movement away from each other while the 2nd grippers are pressed against the 1st with tapes held between them.
