PURPOSE:To perform extremely colorful, bright, and varied display possible by using a liquid crystal display device utilizing a guest-host effect as a dial for an analog type electronic wristwatch. CONSTITUTION:The hour hand 1 and the minute hand 2 are disposed on the upper side of a guest-hose type liquid crystal panel. Liquid crystal molecules 8 are oriented homogeneously and the dye molecules 7 included in the molecules 8 are also oriented homogeneously in the same direction. Hence, in this case, the panel is assuming a colored state. Now, when transparent electrodes 5, 6 are formed on two sheets of transparent electrodes 3, 4, and a voltage is applied, the nematic liquid crystal molecules having positive dielectric anisotropy move in such a way as to align the long axis direction of the molecules in the electric field direction and therefore the dye molecules around the same also move in the same direction in accordance with this and light transmits therethrough without causing absorption of light. Hence, if the transparent electrodes are applied almost the entire surface of the liquid crystal panel, the dial for analog display of the color tone by absorption of the dyes when the voltage is off, and of the color tone of a reflection plate 9 when the voltage is is on, are obtained. |
