<p>The drum for carrying the cable or chain on which clock weights are supported is mounted on a spindle. Between the drum and the spindle there is a tube and the space outside this tube, but contained within the drum, is occupied by a spring. One end of the coil spring is attached to a hook on the inside of the body of the drum, while the other end is attached to a hook on the tube. The tube is attached to the end plate by a ratchet mechanism. The wheel driving the clock mechanism is connected to the drum by a ratchet. The arrangement is such that when the clock is wound up, the weight is lifted, but at the same time the spring within the drum is tensioned. This increases the amount of energy stored within a given sized system.</p> |
