<p>The machine includes a single oscillating table in which several moulds are located. On the base of each mould are pivot mountings for levers holding a pair of tong jaws. The tong jaws are actuated by a jack to clamp a dummy starter billet in the mould, so that the mould is not oscillated w.r.t. the dummy at the start of casting in one mould while the other moulds are being used to cast other billets. The tong jaws are pref. hollow so a cavity is formed through which cooling water can flow; and the pressure of the tong jaws can pref. be varied. In one pref. modification a telescopic rod is used to join a chill head to the dummy. It was previously necessary to commence the casting of billets in all the moulds simultaneously, because the oscillation of the moulds w.r.t. the dummy can jam the latter in a mould. The invention permits casting to be started separately in each mould.</p> |
