The electrical connections to an automotive battery are automatically cut if the vehicle experiences an impact or tilts beyond a certain angle. This reduces the risk of sparking in the vehicle electrical circuit after damage incurred in an accident, thus reducing the risk of fire. Normal operation of the vehicle requires operation of a push button (2) in addition to the ignition switch (6). Both an inertia switch (4) and a mercury tilt switch (5) must be closed for supply to be applied to the coil (3) of a relay (8) whose contact (1) connects the battery to the vehicle electrical system (10). A normally closed interrupt switch (7) then takes over supply of the relay coil when the push button (2) is released. A collision or rollover of the vehicle operates either the inertia (4) or tilt (5) switch, opening the supply contact (1), and disconnecting the vehicle electric system.
|
