PURPOSE:To concurrently perform reducing reaction in a cathode chamber and oxidizing reaction in an anode chamber, when an organic compound is electrolyzed with use of a cation exchange membrane, by locating a specified protective diaphragm between an anode in the anode chamber and the exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell is divided into a cathode chamber and an anode chamber with a cation exchange membrane in which polyethylene imine is fixed by covalent bond through a sulfonic group. A compound having a molecular weight of 100 or more and including a cationic functional group is let uniformly exist on one surface of the membrane. A Pb plate is used as a cathode, while a PbO2-coated Pb plate is used as an anode. A polyethlene screen including polyvinyl chloride as a diaphragm material is located as a protective diaphragm between the anode and the cation exchange membrane. An organic compound including a functional group to be reduced is charged as an aqueous catholyte, while an organic compound including a functional group to be oxidized is charged as an aqueous anolyte. In this state, electrolysis is conducted. Electrolytic reduction and electrolytic oxidation in the two chambers are effectively done at the same time, or electrolytic reduction only in the cathode chamber is effectively performed. |
