A roof structure for a motor vehicle has a roof plate, a roof rail with a plurality of holes, a roof lining and a carrier which is fixed at its two ends on the roof rail and bears the roof panelling under the roof plate. The carrier is produced from a hollow tube and has an opening near to each of its ends. A locking element which is separated from the carrier is attached to the opening of the carrier in such a way that the locking element rests against the roof rail when the ends of the carrier are inserted into the associated holes in the roof rail.
