In the process, wood is ground by means of a rotating grinding element (2) in a pressurised grinding chamber (3) and warm spray water (6) is sprayed into the grinding chamber. The groundwood pulp obtained is thickened by dewatering and the water removed is reused as spray water (6) for the grinding chamber. Simultaneously to the thickening, the groundwood pulp is cooled by spraying with cooling water (E) whose temperature is lower than that of the groundwood pulp. At least one part (E1) of this cooling water is stored and added to the water (F) removed from the groundwood pulp as replacement water for the spray water which is lost in the grinding process. By this means, the heat energy produced in the groundwood pulp by the grinding process is utilised for heating the replacement water, as a result of which the need to use external energy for this heating can be avoided. <IMAGE>
