1,030,144. Making vehicle differential casings. LANSING BAGNALL Ltd. March 23, 1965 [April 9, 1964], No. 14776/64. Heading B3A. In the manufacture of a differential casing a tube is slotted on opposite sides along a middle portion, transverse slits are made at each end of the slot and opposed V-shaped notches are cut into the edges of the slot. The tube is subjected to compression thereby opening out the slotted middle portion to form a space 13 for the differential mechanism. The edges of the closed notches are welded together and machined plates 25, 26 (Fig. 6, not shown) are welded to the front and rear sides of the casing member. If required, the tube may be reinforced by internally or externally fitted sleeves. Alternatively, the sides of the tube may be deformed by pulling outwardly. |
