derivs. (I), 3,6,8- trioxa-bicyclo(3.2.1)octan-4-one derivs. (II), 1,3-dioxane-2- carboxylic acid derivs. (III) and 1,3-dioxolane-2-carboxylic acid derivs. (IV) are new. R is opt. substd. 2-18C alkyl or an opt. substd. araliphatic or aromatic residue; R1 is opt. substd. 1-18C alkyl or an opt. substd. araliphatic or aromatic residue; R2 is carboxy (the H-atom of which may be replaced by a metal atom) or carbamoyl; and R3 is H, or the carboxylic acid residue of a physiologically acceptable carboxylic acid or of a pharmacologically active substance. The new cpds. are stable (esp. oxidn.-stable) entities which permit the combination in a single molecule of two or (in the case of (III) and (IV)) three active components, namely an alpha-keto- carboxylic acid (pref. one which is a precursor of an essential alpha-amino acid), glycerol (which is closely involved in carbohydrate metabolism), and the residue of a natural fatty acid or a pharmacologically active (pref. antiinflammatory) carboxylic acid. The new cpds. can be used in human or veterinary medicine in connection with amino acid metabolism, as transport form of drugs contg. carboxy gps., and as nutrients for humans, animals and microorganisms.
