The invention relates to a hydrostatic test apparatus for steel pipes or the like which has two main supports, a front end mounting and a rear end mounting, the mountings being arranged in a position between the main supports so that the plane passing through the axis of a pipe to be tested essentially coincides with the longitudinal axis which passes through the centre of gravity of the main supports. This reduces the size of the main supports and it is possible to arrange a pipe-transporting device, etc., beneath the main supports in order to facilitate the displacement of the rear end mounting.
