Process for the preparation of a polysaccharide

A polysaccharide with a molecular weight of more than 200,000 is obtained by cultivation of Bacillus polymyxa No. 271 (FERM-P 1824) in an aqueous culture medium which contains assimilable saccharides. The polysaccharide and its salts with alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, manganese, aluminium, zinc, copper and with ammonium ions have excellent activity in reducing the serum and liver cholesterol levels and the atherogenic index and are therefore suitable as component to pharmaceutical compositions and dietetic foods.
